FOR STUDENTS INVOLVED IN ALL BOYS SPORTS THROUGH THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION, INSURANCE IS NOW PROVIDED FOR HEAD INJURIES, NO DEDUCTIBLE OR CO-PAY IOWA FARM BUREAU IS COVERING THE HIM EXPENSE FOR EACH ATHLETE. >> ONE OF THE BIGGEST BARRIERS IS ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE. ADAM: IF YOU DON’T ANY INSURANCE, YOU’RE STILL ELIGIBLE FOR HEADSTRONG. THE ASSOCIATION HOPES IT WILL HELP WITH THE HIGH COSTS OF CONCUSSION TREATMENT AND REHABILITATION AND SECURE THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY HELP ATHLETES NEED>> I THINK IT EASES THE BURD ON THE FAMILY. I THINK IT ALLOWS THEM TO GET THE TREATMENT THEY NEED, SO THEY CAN RETURN THE PLAYER OR THE PLAYER CAN RETURN TO CLASS AS SOON AS HE POSSIBLY CAN. ADAM: IOWA LAW SAYS, SCHOOLS MUST INSTITUTE PROTOCOLS THAT EASE STUDENTS BACK INTO ATHLETIC AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AFTER A CONCUSSION. >> IT’S NOT A KNEE INJURY, IT IS A BRAIN INJURY. YOU NEED PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND HOW THE BRAIN WORKS TO MAKE THAT DECISION ON WHEN IT IS SAFE TO RETURN. Fall sports resumed Monday for high school students across the state. Should an athlete suffer a head-injury while participating in their sport, the Iowa High School Athletic Association says it has a plan to help parents cover the cost. The HeadStrong program provides free insurance to athletes participating in IHSAA-sanctioned sports.
