Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Producers Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) on Friday urged the Federal Government to formulate a life insurance policy for the entertainment industry.

This would serve as a benefit for practitioners in case of loss of lives in the course of practicing, Mr Debo Alexander, the governor of the association, Lagos chapter, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Alexander spoke on the sideline of the ongoing 2nd National Convention of the association holding in Lagos.

He said that the three-day convention would be geared toward uniting theatre arts’ practitioners across the country together under one umbrella.

It would also be used by the association to advocate life insurance policy for all practitioners.

“As far as I am concerned, there is no insurance policy designed for the practitioners in the entertainment industry which will not be encouraging, ” he said.

He said that the contributions of the industry to the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and to government Internal Generated Revenues (IGR) could not be over-emphasised.

Alexander said that there was the need for an insurance policy because some of the members of the association had lost their lives in active service and their families had nothing to fall back on.

“We need to let the government know the importance of this policy in the lives of practitioners so it can stand up to its responsibility and do the needful to the industry that had contributed hugely to the economy.

He said that the practitioners should use the convention to discuss the issue by speaking unanimously on it.

“If all theatre artistes across the country are under one umbrella, we will achieve a lot and our unity will move mountain.

“We need to reorganise ourselves in the industry, we need to work in harmony in other to develop the sector, In unity lies our strength, ” he said.

Alexander said that the convention would also evaluate the association’s achievements, challenges in the last few months and chart a way forward for the industry.

He said that since the inception of the association, it had begun to change the perceptions of members toward film productions by shooting quality and standard movies.

Alexander said that if the association could get the needed support from the government and the agencies in charge of the entertainment industry, the industry would be able to compete favourably with its foreign counterparts.

The three-day convention would end on Nov. 18.
