Jets Pushed to Sign 31-TD Pass Catcher as Final Piece

The New York Jets still have things left on their to-do list ahead of training camp.

According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, one of those items should be signing former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Tyler Boyd.

“It wouldn’t hurt to add another proven pass catcher to [Justin] Fields’ support group. [Garrett] Wilson is a No. 1 caliber receiver, while Josh Reynolds and rookie tight end Mason Taylor were both sensible additions. The Jets have a lack of depth at wideout, though,” Knox explained. “They should consider signing seasoned free agents like Keenan Allen or Tyler Boyd.”

Boyd, 30, has caught 31 touchdown receptions during his nine-year NFL career.

A Boyd Signing Wouldn’t Create Headlines, but Would Fit Jets Narrative

If the Jets signed Boyd, it would be a pass-the-biscuits kind of move. It wouldn’t move the needle for the sports talk shows across America. However, what the move would follow is the message of Jets head coach Aaron Glenn all offseason, “moving in silence.”

Boyd entered the NFL as the No. 55 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft.

He spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Only twice during that stretch did he surpass 1,000 yards receiving. On both occasions, he did it barely 1,028 (2018) and 1,046 (2019).

Boyd has never been a Pro Bowler, nor has he ever received an All-Pro nod. The former Pitt product is a football player who doesn’t have a huge ceiling, but brings a consistent floor.

In seven of his nine seasons, Boyd has finished with at least 600 receiving yards and at least 54 receptions.

The Jets don’t have a clear and obvious No. 2 pass catcher on this roster. It’s unclear if Boyd would fill that void, but he would provide another security blanket for Fields and the offense in 2025.

Boyd got on Jets fans’ radars last year ahead of the Week 2 matchup versus the Titans.

Boyd said Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner is definitely “beatable,” which caught the attention of the defense.

The Jets ended up winning that game 24-17, and Boyd only caught two receptions for 26 receiving yards.

Low Risk Type Move for the Jets

This past season, Boyd signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Titans. The deal only included $1.2 million in total guarantees.

The former Pitt product had one of the worst years of his professional career. He finished with 39 receptions for 390 receiving yards and failed to score a touchdown. Those were all career lows in a season where Boyd appeared in 16 games.

That was also the first time in his NFL career that he completed a season without scoring a touchdown.

According to Spotrac’s calculated market value, Boyd could command a one-year deal for $2.2 million. That annual salary would place him No. 90 among the highest-paid wide receivers in football, per Spotrac.

Boyd has been around the block. With the Jets, he wouldn’t have to be Superman; being Clark Kent would be good enough.

The Jets need an insurance policy at wide receiver with so many unknowns on the depth chart. Boyd would provide a nice floor for the room.
