Major UK supermarket makes change to its loyalty scheme this week
Morrisons shoppers will now be able to use their More Card points in a different way - here's everything you need to know about the new change
Morrisons has announced a significant update to its More Card loyalty scheme. Starting this week, Morrisons More Card users can now contribute their loyalty points to the charity Marie Curie.
Customers at the supermarket chain can donate their More Card points to Marie Curie in increments of 1,000 points, equivalent to £1, via the More Card App or the More website. Each contribution will be converted into cash and given to Marie Curie.
When shopping at Morrisons, More members earn five More points per product when they use their card in-store or online. After accumulating 5,000 points, customers are rewarded with a Morrisons Fiver, which is a £5 voucher redeemable on future purchases either in-store or online.
The Morrisons More scheme also provides personalised offers to its shoppers. David Scott, corporate affairs director at Morrisons, said: "We are delighted to see this next step in our partnership with Marie Curie which builds on £1million already raised thanks to our incredible colleagues and customers."
He added: "Today's news marks a meaningful evolution in the Morrisons More Card loyalty programme and follows feedback from customers who want their everyday shopping to make a difference to a great charity. Whether our customers choose to spend their points or donate them, every transaction now has the potential to support families facing terminal illness."
Marie Curie offers support to individuals requiring end-of-life care, as well as their families, friends and caregivers, reports the Mirror. Matthew Reed, Chief Executive at Marie Curie, said: "Every pound donated helps ensure more people can access the expert care and compassion they need at the end of life.
"We're proud to be partnering with Morrisons in this innovative way and look forward to seeing the impact of this new loyalty feature across the communities we serve."
This news follows Morrisons' announcement that it will be extending its More loyalty scheme to all of its franchised stores this year. Last year, the supermarket chain began implementing its loyalty scheme in 1,000 Morrisons Daily stores.
However, this year, the rollout will be completed, with all Morrisons Daily sites participating in the scheme. The supermarket stated: "Morrisons More Card will soon be available to all franchise stores.
"Coming in 2025, Morrisons More is the first supermarket loyalty programme to be available in franchise convenience stores. Key customer benefits [include] specific prices for More cardholders, points rewards across many products [and] points promotions on some products."
Despite this, Morrisons has also announced the closure of 17 convenience stores on April 16, with the exception of the Haxby Morrisons Daily store which will shut its doors a month later on May 14. The supermarket chain also revealed plans to close 52 in-store cafes, all 18 market kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies.
Following a "wide-ranging review", Morrisons concluded that these services were not cost-effective. The company stated that the closures would "help mitigate recent significant cost increases" including a rise in employers' National Insurance and the minimum wage.
While most employees affected by these changes will be offered alternative roles within the company. The supermarket confirmed that approximately 365 jobs are at risk of redundancy.
