Indian Passport Ranks As Second Cheapest Passport In The World

New Delhi: The Indian passport is now the second cheapest passport globally, right after the UAE. This finding comes from a study conducted by Compare the Market AU, an Australian firm renowned for its analysis in various sectors. The study delved into the costs associated with obtaining passports from different countries, analysing factors such as acquisition expenses, cost-effectiveness over the validity period, and the extent of visa-free access offered.
According to the study, obtaining an Indian passport costs around Rs 1500 (USD 18.07) for a validity period of 10 years, making it exceptionally economical. Remarkably, when considering the cost per year of validity, India outshines all other nations, with a low cost of USD 1.81 per year. This affordability factor places India at the forefront, alongside South Africa and Kenya, which follow closely with costs of approximately USD 3.05 and USD 3.09 per year, respectively.
However, while the Indian passport proves to be cost-effective, its scope for visa-free travel remains somewhat limited. Holders of an Indian passport can currently enjoy visa-free access to 62 countries. In contrast, the UAE secures the top spot not only for its affordability in acquisition but also for offering visa-free access to a larger number of countries.
The study also identifies Mexico as the most expensive country in terms of passport acquisition, with a fee of USD 231.05 for a 10-year passport. Australia follows closely behind, requiring USD 225.78 for a similar passport duration.
Adrian Taylor, the Executive General Manager of General Insurance at Compare the Market, emphasised the importance of travel insurance in mitigating potential risks associated with passport-related issues.
“Nobody wants to be stressed out on their holidays. Damage, loss or theft of your important documents is an unfortunate risk many people face while overseas. Depending on your policy, travel insurance may be able to help cover the cost of a replacement if you need to apply for one,’ he said.
