2024 University Student Senate Elections

Jimmy Janco ’25

Running for: Student body president

(He/Him/His)

Major(s): Political science

Artist I’m listening to right now: Taylor Swift

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

Janco: There are issues with the student body that I don’t think the administration is listening to. Public safety, academic materials, basic needs insecurity — these are all issues facing every student. And I don’t think we’re really getting satisfactory answers. So, I would say that as student body president, I would be your voice and your advocate.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

Janco: One thing that’s important is to just get buy-in from members of the campus community. A lot of the things that I’m proposing come from individual interactions I’ve had with students talking to me about problems they’re having, whether it’s feeling unsafe on campus [or] feeling like they can’t afford what they need to live on campus. So continuing to have those conversations and providing forums in Student Senate for students to provide that testimony, I think is really important.

Milton O’Brien ’25

Running For: Student body president

(He/Him/His)

Major(s): International business and marketing

Artist I’m listening to right now: Zach Bryan

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

O’Brien: I have experience. I am a person who is open to feedback, that is also dedicated to the community. I have shown through my experience within the Student Senate, so far, and through the accomplishments that I’ve had, that I care about the community and I’m willing to go this step farther to make sure that there are results. I’m very driven, and when I set myself up to a goal, I make sure that they’re always completed. That’s why I set myself a standard that I know that I can accomplish.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

O’Brien: We must be able to first have connections with [the] administration and be able to voice [our] concerns and then be able to follow up. Those three steps are very important because if we tell them but we don’t follow up, then nothing may happen. And I think that’s what has been wrong in the past. And then we just want to make sure that we use the voice of Student Senate to be able to work with administration.

Anna Morani ’26

Running for: Student body vice president (Hawk Hill Campus)

(She/Her/Hers)

Major(s): Communication sciences and disorders

Artist I’m listening to right now: Lizzy McAlpine, Frank Ocean

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

Morani: Any student on either campus should vote for me because I am a person who they could come to with their own problems. So, no matter if I know you, [or] if I don’t, I’m a friendly face that they can talk to about issues that they’re facing here on Hawk Hill.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

Morani: I’m going to hold myself accountable. Not just for myself but for all of the students, knowing that they elected me in this position, that it’s my job, I have to accomplish it. But moreover, that the students are at a disadvantage right now — mentally, when they don’t know what to do or in other situations, with DEI or communications. Just knowing that the students are even remotely at a disadvantage motivates me.

Liang Jun Ren ’25

Running for: Student body vice president (UCity Campus)

(He/Him/His)

Major(s): PharmD

Artist I’m listening to right now: Lyn Lapid

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

Ren: A vote for me means another perspective, another pair of eyes to see what you may [have] not [been] able to see before. I will be able to provide you with what is going on at UCity, and you may be able to provide me with what you think is fun on Hawk Hill. So I think it’s a mutual relationship where I can provide you with some fun events, and I think I’ll be able to bring you more students who are interested in joining organizations, doing more clubs, sports [and] classes.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

Ren: I hope to host a training to educate the officers and newcomer officers so that they have a reliable source of what to do in a first aid situation. Secondly, in guarding shuttle and transportation, I hope to work closely with [Assistant Vice President of Public Safety & Security]  Finnie in transportation to work out and resolve any IT issues. Whether that means working on the app itself, making sure that it’s functionable or making an instruction video on how to use TripShot and how the shuttle may or may not be working in the upcoming academic years. And so that will be also in progress…In the form of mending communications, I hope through the professional working groups and through working as the vice president of UCity promoting the Senate feedback forms and promoting the campus life here as well as what Senate does, I’ll be able to mend that relationship and hopefully build a new one in the upcoming academic years.

Colin Biddle ’25

Running for: Student body treasurer

(He/Him/His)

Major(s): Finance

Artist I’m listening to right now: Hailu Mergia

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

Biddle: What I want to do as treasurer, overall is to bring transparency to what the Senate does. I think the best way to go about this is through showing our physical allocations — the money that we’re actually putting towards initiatives on campus. And the best way to go about this, I think, is to directly post on social media, to be more active and to get that actual engagement.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

Biddle: It’s important to have a list of what students want. So, for example, in SBAC [Student Budget Allocations Committee], when I go to the meetings, I want to have a list of ideas from conversations that I’ll be having with students…I can bring those up and represent their ideas in an accurate way. And I could do something similar with going to Instagram and creating more transparency, but each situation has its own approach that needs to be taken.

Ashley Rodgers ’25

Running for: Student body treasurer

(She/Her/Hers)

Major(s): Finance and risk management and insurance

Artist I’m listening to right now: Dan + Shay

The Hawk: Why should a St. Joe’s student vote for you?

Rodgers: I understand the value of $1. I spend all of my free time going home and waitressing on the weekends and also babysitting. I pay for my parking pass, I pay for my textbooks, I pay for everything, [including] my rent. So I really do value your money, and I understand that so many students on this campus also work for their money. And I think it’s really important that it’s not being handled incorrectly.

The Hawk: How will you go about accomplishing your goals once elected?

Rodgers: My big goal is to create an Instagram for SBAC because all of the clubs on campus and Greek life can come request funds from SBAC for any event that they desire…It would be a really good place of central information for kids to be able to know where that $250 Student Activities fee is going [and] the things that it’s funding so that they could then go to those events.
