The Japanese Business Association of Cambodia (JBAC) recently celebrated its 30th anniversary at a glittering ceremony in Phnom Penh.

Several dignitaries attended the ceremony that marked the remarkable contributions of the Japanese business community in the country.

Attending the function at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, JBAC Chairman Yogo Kanda said he is looking forward to an improved performance from Japanese businesspeople following the recovery from the Covid-19 situation in the Kingdom.

Talking about the remarkable journey of his organisation in the country, he told Khmer Times, “Obviously, we have also faced some difficulties during the Covid-19 period, and some of our members returned to Japan. However, the situation has changed, and we are confident about the growth potential of Cambodia. Our members are looking forward to a good performance in the following years.”

He said the organization had 270 members before Covid-19 and now has 250 members representing various industries.

Eight of its members have launched their operations in Cambodia during the first half of this year, and the president expects the number to increase by the end of 2022.

“Around 25 percent of our members are in the manufacturing sector, followed by commerce and services. Similarly, we have a good representation in banking, insurance, IT, etc,” he pointed out.

JBAC, established in 1992, is working to contribute to the development of the commerce and industry of Japanese companies in Cambodia and the economic activities between the two countries.

JBAC officials said since 2010, the number of Japanese companies entering the Kingdom has increased. The manufacturing industry increased exports and contributed to Cambodia’s economic growth.

JBAC was registered with the Ministry of Commerce as a commerce and industry association in 2011.

In 2015, it introduced a committee system to deal with individual issues, facilitating and evolving organisational activities.
