Ohioans Encouraged to Winterize Property, Review Insurance

November 30, 2021

The Ohio Department of Insurance is urging people to winterize their property and review insurance now in preparation for the state’s harsh winter weather.

Ways to winterize include:

  • Clean debris from gutters and downspouts
  • Address missing shingles and overhanging tree limbs
  • Inspect the underside of the roof from the attic for signs of leaks
  • Protect against frozen and burst water pipes by maintaining adequate heat in one’s home
  • Insulate water pipes

ODI is asking policyholders to review protections and coverage amounts, evaluate personal possessions coverage options, review coverage for after-the-fact expenses and complete a home inventory.

Property policies generally cover structure and contents damage from wind, ice, water but usually exclude flooding, which typically requires the purchase of a separate flood insurance policy.
